THE WAYPOINT SUR

The card and the cover
The tarjeta sanitaria — health card in your wallet, and the NUHSA number on it, tell Andalucía's health service, the SAS, who you are. Whether it owes you care is answered by a record the card does not show.
That record can change while the card stays the same. A card that worked last winter proves it worked last winter.
The SAS autumn jab campaign is open: flu free from 60 since 21 October, COVID from 70 or with a risk condition. And on 15 October the doctors' union Sindicato Médico Andaluz announced stoppages from 13 November to 4 December. Announced only: we found no registration by 26 October, and the regional health minister says it will not happen.
Two layers
For workers, Spanish-state pensioners and S1 holders (the S1 is the form that registers UK or EU health cover here), the right to care is recognised nationally, by the Seguridad Social's INSS. The SAS makes it real: it issues the card and keeps your user record, the BDU, holding your assigned centro de salud — health centre and doctor.
The INSS must report to the Ministry of Health daily as a right is recognised, varied or ended (Royal Decree 1192/2012, article 9). The SAS's own card page says the card does not change when the status behind it does.
The convenio especial — pay-in agreement for public cover is a different route: a contract formalised directly with the SAS, outside the national one. The fee is €60 a month under 65 and €157 from 65.
On 28 September we said the NUHSA identifies you and does not prove entitlement, when booking a flu jab. The status behind it can change, too.
The checks, by route
Confirmed October 2026.
Work, a Spanish pension or an S1. The Seguridad Social's Sede runs a lookup with the unlovely name Asistencia sanitaria: Consulta del derecho. It accepts a NIE and needs no digital certificate: fill in your details, take the reference number, and come back after at least 15 minutes, or have it emailed. It stays up for 30 days.
"Tiene derecho" arrives with a certificate to download. "No se localiza", the lookup did not find you, means a follow-up (the page says what next), and is not proof of no cover.
Everyone on the public side. ClicSalud+ basic access (card number or NUHSA, ID document, date of birth), then Datos personales, then Datos administrativos. The SAS says this screen shows your assigned centre and professionals as the BDU holds them.
A failed login returns "Identificación incorrecta"; the SAS blames typing errors or a record still being validated, while care continues in person or through Salud Responde. It says nothing about your cover.
No login at all. Ask your centro de salud for the certificado de datos de BDU — the SAS's printout of what it holds on you.
Convenio holders. The Seguridad Social lookup is not your check. Your evidence is the formalised convenio and the SAS record, or that BDU certificate; the payment leaving your account proves neither formalisation nor a doctor on its own.
Your jab history. In ClicSalud+ under Salud, then Vacunas, secure access only: a digital certificate, DNIe or Cl@ve with advanced registration (basic Cl@ve does not open it). Records run from 2010. A missing entry does not prove a missing jab.
Secure access with a TIE. Cl@ve's video registration is for Spanish DNI holders; the ACCV's video certificate accepts a valid TIE, as we covered on 13 October. That refines our 10 August note about a Cl@ve video route with a TIE and a phone camera: it is for the Spanish DNI.
If the check does not find you
Asking first needs no confirmed gap. Salud Responde (955 54 50 60, 24 hours) answers health-card queries for any route; so does your centro de salud's citizen-service desk, or the Distrito Sanitario Costa del Sol's at Av. de Mijas 28, Fuengirola, 951 06 22 22. A new registration waits for a proven gap.
Work or a Spanish pension. If the lookup finds you and the SAS record looks wrong, take the INSS document, your ID and a padrón — town-hall registration certificate to your centro de salud. If it does not find you, start with the INSS.
S1. The S1 goes to the INSS first, online at the Sede or by appointment, then to the centro de salud with your ID and the INSS document.
Convenio. The Seguridad Social lookup is not your check, so the dated BDU certificate from the centre is your evidence of what the SAS holds; worth having before anyone argues otherwise.
Private insurance only. Outside this check. Flu goes through your insurer's centres; COVID booking is open regardless of insurance, within the eligible groups.
Lookup drew a blank, or the record looks wrong, and the chase is in Spanish? The Waypoint Navigator service takes it on. Our Navigators make the calls, request the documents, and attend the INSS or centro de salud appointment, and only create a new registration if a real gap shows up. €30 an hour. Tell us what is stuck →
Spanish-lite
¿Me puede dar el certificado de datos de BDU? — Could you give me the BDU data certificate?
¿En mi ficha aparece un médico asignado? — Does my record show an assigned doctor?
The bottom line
The card identifies you; the status covers you, and our read is that the status deserves a look the card never gets. A reference number and at least 15 minutes, or a sheet of paper from the centre, is where that look starts. If what comes back needs chasing in Spanish, hand it to the Navigator service.
See you on the paseo — A. and the WaypointSur team, kettle on for the 15-minute wait.
