THE WAYPOINT SUR

One cut, different reported prices
Since 1 October the duty on unleaded petrol has been 20 cents a litre below its ordinary rate everywhere in Spain, up from 5 cents in September. With VAT, about 24 cents a litre at the pump, 18 more than September, if a station passed it all on. The law set the duty. It did not set the price on any forecourt, and the prices Málaga-province stations reported afterwards were far from uniform.
Confirmed 8 October 2026 (ministry price register, state gazette, regional government, employment service).
Diesel's cut was already 20 cents in September and stays there; no additional duty reduction on 1 October.
What stations reported
A ministry register publishes the prices that gasolineras — petrol stations report to it. We compared the entries for the same 302 Málaga-province stations reporting 95-octane petrol labelled E5 at midnight on 30 September and again at midnight on 1 October.
The middle station reported a fall of 18 cents, close to the extra relief. That alone does not prove the cut was passed on. About half, 153 stations, reported falls of 17.5 cents or more. Forty-five, about one in seven, reported no change or a one-cent fall.
By Thursday 8 October afternoon 44 of those 45 had a current entry; 18 of those 44 were still less than 10 cents below their 30 September price. Wholesale prices move too, and register entries can lag the forecourt.
Our read: sellers' pricing may shape how tax relief reaches your tank. These reported prices do not establish how much tax relief each station passed on.
Thursday afternoon in Málaga
At 17:03 on Thursday 8 October, 57 stations in the city of Málaga were reporting 95 E5 petrol between €1.689 and €1.909: a 22-cent gap, about €11 on a 50-litre tank, before any detour. Cheapest reported: E.S. Las Palmeras, Calle Diderot 66, 29004 Málaga; next lowest €1.697. Prices can change.
Elsewhere that afternoon, cheapest to dearest per litre: Torremolinos 20 cents, Vélez-Málaga 19, Benalmádena 18, Marbella 16, Fuengirola 14, Mijas 14, Estepona 12.5. Málaga city's 22-cent gap is comparable to the 24-cent cut including VAT if fully passed on, not a typical saving.

What comes next
November's petrol cut is 13 cents per litre, or 20 if its September price index, published by statistics office INE on 14 October, exceeds September 2025 by more than 15%. December's is 20 cents if October's index exceeds October 2025 by more than 15%; otherwise 13 if September qualified, otherwise six. Diesel follows these rules using its own index.
With parliament dissolved since 6 October for the 29 November election, the Diputación Permanente — standing committee of Congress, which sits during dissolution, meets on Friday 16 October to decide whether to validate the decree; if not, the decree stops operating, with the legal cutoff established by the official decision. Fuel already bought is unaffected.
West Nile alerts in Málaga province have ended
Andalucía's regional government lists West Nile virus alert areas in 15 municipalities as of 8 October, 09:30; none in Málaga province. Cártama's ended on 22 September, Pizarra's on 1 October and Alhaurín de la Torre's on 2 October; Pizarra keeps one confirmed human case in 2026. We reported those alerts on 25 September. These administrative alerts have ended; emptying standing water at home still matters.
Flu jabs without an appointment
For anyone eligible for the public campaign, the regional government announced on 28 September walk-in jabs, no appointment, every Wednesday from 11 November to 16 December, subject to vaccine availability and campaign monitoring under its 24 September instruction. Two Saturdays in shopping centres are planned; we found no dates or venues. People covered only privately ordinarily use their insurer, as we covered on 28 September.
The update we promised
On 25 September we called a rise in unemployment likely. It was: SEPE, the national employment service, records 98,152 registered unemployed in Málaga province in September, up 1,057 on August, the first monthly rise since January, still 11,214 fewer than a year earlier.

The bottom line
The duty cut leaves room for different retail prices. The Geoportal lets you compare reported prices before filling up.
