THE WAYPOINT SUR

We’ve come a long way from “Más despacio, por favor”
The stack we sold you in November
Last November we published The Translation Stack That Actually Works: three apps, €0 to €17 a month, covering the clerk at the counter, the letter in the drawer, and the contract in the inbox. It went to 47 subscribers. The list is many times that now, so for most of you this is new, and for everyone the prices and half the tools have changed.
In February, Your SpanGlish Is Fine. Until It Isn't. drew the line: your tools handle daily Spain, and they have not touched the administrative state. That line held all year. Today is the kit for both sides of it, re-tested this week, with the one free official service almost nobody in Andalucía knows exists.
The honest headline from the re-test: the easy 80 percent of the language problem got cheaper and better in nine months. The hard 20 percent got more dangerous, because the better the machines sound, the easier it is to trust them in exactly the places where their output has zero legal standing.
The audit, tool by tool
3PO, the hand-the-phone-over app: held, with a correction. Still free, still the fastest way to have a two-way conversation with a clerk, now with a broadcast mode for translated group talks. Our November line about a premium tier with offline mode did not survive checking: reviews and the current listing say it needs a connection. Treat it as free and online-only. Confirmed August 2026.
Google Translate: held, then leapfrogged. The camera is still the right tool for the letter from the ayuntamiento — town hall. The bigger news is that Google rebuilt Translate around Gemini, and live speech-to-speech translation is rolling out inside the app, though staged by region and account, so check your own phone rather than our word. Confirmed August 2026.
DeepL, the long-form workhorse: held, repriced. The November €8.74 plan is gone; the individual plan now runs €7.49 a month billed annually, checked from Spain this week. The free tier remains character-capped, which matters the day you paste a contract into it. Confirmed August 2026.
And the one November could not mention: AirPods Live Translation reached Spain with iOS 26.2 in December. AirPods Pro 2 or AirPods 4 with noise cancelling, an Apple Intelligence iPhone, Spanish supported. The earbuds finally do the ambient thing here. Confirmed August 2026.
The free interpreter almost nobody asks for
Readers covered by the S1, the form that entitles UK and EU state pensioners to Spanish public healthcare, keep telling us they pay for private care anyway, purely because of language. Before renewing that policy, know this: every public health centre in Andalucía can conference a professional interpreter into your appointment, free, through the Salud Responde teletraducción — phone interpreting service. It covers 46 languages, English around the clock. You cannot dial it yourself; the staff can, and asking is one sentence, printed below. Confirmed August 2026.
The line where the stack stops counting
Everything above is for daily Spain. The moment a document enters officialdom, extranjería files, courts, the civil registry, academic titles, a notary signing, machine translation has zero legal standing, however fluent it reads. Those procedures require a traductor jurado — sworn translator appointed by the foreign ministry, whose public list was last updated in April 2026. Budget €30 to 120 per page depending on language and document, one to three working days plus courier, urgent jobs at a premium. In Málaga city, CBLingua at Calle Marqués de Larios 4, planta 1 (tel. 638 890 153) works with ministry-appointed sworn translators; online agencies courier province-wide. Confirmed August 2026.
The free tools are good now, and that is the danger: they make a sworn-line document feel handled when it is not, usually inside a deadline week.
The 15-minute drill
Run it this week, before you need it.
Pull one real Spanish letter from the drawer and camera-scan it. Pass condition: you get the topic AND the deadline.
Test your live-translate option, the Translate app, 3PO, or the AirPods, against Canal Sur radio for 60 seconds.
Find the nearest sworn translator for your language on the ministry list and save the number in your contacts under "Traductor jurado". That contact is the piece most households are missing.
Tell whoever goes to medical appointments about the Salud Responde interpreter line, and save the asking phrase below.
The full kit, with the ministry-list walkthrough, current prices, and the sworn-line checklist, is in our new translation guide, published this week.
Spanish-lite
¿Pueden llamar al servicio de teletraducción de Salud Responde? — Can you call the Salud Responde interpreting service?
¿Esta traducción tiene que ser jurada? — Does this translation have to be sworn?
The bottom line
Nine months re-priced one tool, rebuilt another, and shipped the earbuds November could only wish for, and none of it moved the line February drew: the free layer owns daily Spain, the sworn layer owns the state, and the expensive mistakes happen when you confuse the two. Run the drill, save the two numbers, ask the one question at the health centre. The stack is cheaper than ever; the boundary is sharper than ever.
When the situation is live, urgent, and on the wrong side of the sworn line, that is what Navigator is for.
Nearly there — A. and the WaypointSur team, with the jurado's number already saved.
